چکیده

The objectives of this research were: 1) to determine how the use of upper extremities to assist during a chair rise task affects lower extremity loading; 2) to examine how task difficulty affects performance when weakness is present; and 3) to compare the compensation strategies utilized by individuals with chronic weakness to those used by patients with acute weakness. Twelve polio survivors with predominant unilateral weakness of the knee extensors and six adults with no history of polio who had recently undergone unilateral knee surgery participated in this study. The sit-stand task was performed under four different conditions that varied by chair height and/or use of armrests. The results showed that the compensation strategies utilized by the polio survivors and surgery patients were similar, although the polio survivors showed a higher degree of asymmetric weight bearing, especially in the most difficult condition. These results may be helpful in predicting sites for future overuse problems.

The effect of dual task training on sit to stand postural control of elderly women with a history of falling

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effect of dual task training including balance sit-to-stand and cognitive exercises on postural control of sit to stand of elderly women with a history of falling. 15 elderly women were randomly divided into control (n=7) and experimental (n=8) groups. Participants implemented training protocol for four weeks in both experimental (balance ...

Sit-to-stand performance depends on sensation, speed, balance, and psychological status in addition to strength in older people.

BACKGROUND Sit-to-stand (STS) performance is often used as a measure of lower-limb strength in older people and those with significant weakness. However, the findings of recent studies suggest that performance in this test is also influenced by factors associated with balance and mobility. We conducted a study to determine whether sensorimotor, balance, and psychological factors in addition to ...

The effect of muscle weakness on the capability gap during gross motor function: a simulation study supporting design criteria for exoskeletons of the lower limb

BACKGROUND Enabling persons with functional weaknesses to perform activities of daily living (ADL) is one of the main challenges for the aging society. Powered orthoses, or exoskeletons, have the potential to support ADL while promoting active participation of the user. For this purpose, assistive devices should be designed and controlled to deliver assistance as needed (AAN). This means that t...

Sit-to-Stand in People with Stroke: Effect of Lower Limb Constraint-Induced Movement Strategies

Background. Weight-bearing asymmetry and impaired balance may contribute to the increased fall risk in people with stroke when rising to stand from sitting. Objective. This study investigated the effect of constraint-induced movement (CIM) strategies on weight-bearing symmetry and balance during sit-to-stand in people with stroke. Methods. A nonrandom convenience sample of fifteen people with s...
